Panjab University issue to crop up at zonal council meeting

The long-standing problem of awarding Panjab University affiliation to colleges in bordering Haryana regions will be covered during the Northern Zonal Council’s 31st meeting, which will take place in Amritsar tomorrow. Amit Shah, the union home minister, will preside over it.

There have been ongoing talks for many years on the topic of extending PU affiliation to colleges in Haryana.

The Haryana Government has consistently pushed for the PU to recognise its colleges, some of which are located as far away as Ambala. Under the direction of UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit, numerous discussions on this subject have been held. Punjab, however, has resisted this idea from the beginning.

The Haryana Government even proposed offering financial support on par with Punjab in an effort to facilitate PU affiliation to colleges up to Ambala. However, despite this offer, Punjab has stubbornly declined the idea. The Punjab Government recently agreed to raise the grant to the university by around Rs 50 crore.

The Punjab Government is reportedly planning to reject this agenda during the conference, according to sources.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme’s success would be assessed during the meeting, according to UT Advisor Dharam Pal.

The transfer of land for the construction of a new Haryana Vidhan Sabha building in Chandigarh, however, was also anticipated to face opposition from the Punjab government.
